Created by Jean de Brunhoff (1899-1937), a French writer and illustrator, Babar the Elephant is one of the most loved characters from childrens fiction. The idea for the stories began as a bedtime story told by Jean's wife Cecile to their two children. Jean carried the characters forward into seven beautifully illustrated books before his untimely death in 1937.
