First edition hardback bound in half black leather with black cloth boards. Five raised bands to spine, gilt stamped title. Blind tooled borders to boards. Tape repair to front endpapers. Sticker to fep from the library of Malcolm Hillier Crew [1877-1932, manager of the carriage and wagon department of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway]. Pencil inscription to fep dated 1877, and ink inscription below dated 1893. Seventy five wood engravings throughout, the double-page engravings to the rear of the book. Binding is quite scuffed, particularly over hinge and to forecorners. Soiling and residue to endpapers. Pages are toned, mostly to the edges and in the gutter, with foxing and thumbing throughout. They remain bright for the most part. A well loved copy, overall good- condition. A nice example, detailed illustrations and interesting provenance.
