First English Edition, 1853. Beautifully bound in full blue cloth with small gilt pictorial detail to the front and decorative detail to the spine. The binding is in an overall good clean condition with just a little wear and fading to the spine, light shelf wear to the top and base. All edges of the text block bright gilt. Yellow end-papers with pencil inscription to the front paste down. Light cracking to the front internal hinge although the binding remains firm. Pages are remarkably clean throughout. Beautifully illustrated title and frontispiece. pp. iv + 330 +2. Overall a good + copy. With provenance from the Beeton family, from Major Beeton's private library. Emilie Carlen (1807 - 1892 ) was a Swedish novelist often likened to Jane Austen.
