The History of the Church of Peterburgh... (Peterborough, 1686)
Symon Gunton

'...Wherein the most remarkable Things concerning that Place, from the First Foundation thereof: With other Passages of History, not unworthy Publick View, are represented.' LARGE PAPER VERSION. Written by Symon Gunton, late Prebendary of said Church. Features a preface on the author and the nature of the book, the history of the church, details of the nine windows, and 'And Appendix, being a Transcript of Such Charters and Priviledges as ae mentioned in the foregoing Discourse'. Latin text to back followed by a supplemental section. A wonderful etching to p.349 of the West Prospect of Peterborough Cathedral, followed by one of the North Prospect.
Large paper version with lovely wide margins rare in this History. Original boards have been rebacked with much preserved. Six raised bands to spine with original title slip showing archaic spelling of 'Peterbur' (contraction of 'Peterburgh'). Attractive gilt motifs to spine. Head and tail sturdy and intact. Boards show minor patches of loss where original leather has been worn through, but these have been sympathetically reinforced during rebacking. Remarkably clean throughout. Pastedown features bookplate reading 'From the Sunderland Library, Blenheim Palace, Purchased July 1882'. Subtle rubbing to top of title page, does not interfere with text. Marking to p.21, very subtle foxing to p.332. Some pages cut from rear; I expect these were blank endpapers removed upon refurbishment to make way for new replacements, so no text lost. No spine lean or internal damage. Clean and bright throughout.
Overall, this is both an incredibly valuable source of Peterborough's history, and a nicely maintained book with some interesting provenance.
