Edition: Second UK Edition
Published By: George Newnes, Ltd.
Hard Back. The second UK edition issued a year after the first although the first to be bound in a distinctive decorative cloth. Original green cloth over bevelled boards with decorative details in gilt and silver to the spines with the front boards elaborately blocked in gilt, silver, and red. The cloth is very lightly worn to the extremities with a little discolouration to the rear. The spines have darkened a touch with slight shelf wear to the top and base. The top edge of the text block is gilt and is a little dull. Internally the binding is tight. The pages are lightly toned especially to the endpapers with foxing to the prelims and very occasionally throughout. Pages otherwise are very clean. Coloured folding map to the rear of volume one is present although with a slight closed tear and a little foxing. Illustrated with chromolithographic plate and many illustrations within the text, some full page. Volume I, pp. xv + 480. Volume II, pp. viii + 456. Overall a good set. This is the official account of Fridtjof Nansen's first Fram expedition of 1893-6 and his account of the journey became a world wide bestseller.
