First edition hardback bound in the original dark blue cloth with gilt floral motif and title to cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Pictorial endpapers and half title page. Full colour illustrated frontispiece printed on glossy paper with caption. Pictorial title page printed in red and black. Additional eleven such plates throughout and numerous line drawings within the text. The cloth is generally in a good clean condition with just a little bumping to the corners and shelf wear to the top and base of the spine. The endpapers are very lightly toned with the very occasional spot of foxing, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Overall a very good example. Notable for Rackham's depictions of historical costumes.
