Modern Painters 6 Volumes Complete

John Ruskin

Edition: Mixed Editions

Published By: George Allen

Mixed editions. Bound in an ivory half vellum by "Truslove and Hanson", with bright red cloth boards. The spines of all volumes are worn down the sides, and have an elegant decorative Arts and Crafts gilt design, as well as burgundy title band with gilt text. In each volume, the binding remains tight, and internally all have beautiful marble endpapers. The text is readable throughout, and a number of illustrations in each volume, some with tissue guards.
Volume I: There is one small mark on the cloth binding on the rear board and some slight wear to the top of the title band. On the verso of the front board, there is a beautifully illustrated bookplate belonging to a previous owner. There are a number of small pencil inscriptions from previous booksellers in the front free-end papers. pp. lxxii + 456.
Volume II: The extremities of the front and rear boards are a little worn, alongside a small nick in the title band. The pages are clean throughout. pp. xxviii + 285.
Volume III: There is particular wear to the top edge of the spine which bleeds onto the rear board. There is a small illustration opposite the title page with a tissue guard. There is slight foxing throughout the first few pages. pp. xv + 365.
Volume IV: There is a small nick in the title band. There is a small pencil inscription belonging to a previous owner in the front free end papers.  There is some marks on the rear end papers. pp. xii + 435.
Volume V: There is particular wear on the bottom right corner of the front board. There is a small pencil inscription belonging to a previous owner on the front marble end pages. There is another illustration opposite the title page with a tissue guard. This volume seems particularly full of illustrations. pp. xiv + 392.
Volume VI: Again, there is a small nick in the title band, and particular wear to the lower corner of the rear board. A general index, this volume is particularly clean throughout. pp. 429. A stunning example of this arts and crafts style binding.
