Harriet Martineau's Autobiography With memoirs By Maria Weston Chapman In Three Volumes

Harriet Martineau

Published By: Smith, Elder, & Co.,

Hardback. All three volumes are handsomely bound by the Queen's Binders, Charles Tuckett in full tan leather with ornate decoration and title bands to the spines while the boards have double-gilt ruled borders. The leather is in a very good clean condition and shows just minimal wear, the gilt is still bright and there is no loss to the title bands. All edges of the text block and endpapers are marbled. Internally the text block is tight with a previous owner's bookplate to the front paste down to all three volumes. There is heavy foxing to the prelims and towards the rear with the very occasional spot of foxing throughout. The pages, however, are generally clean with frontispiece illustration to volumes one and two. Overall a lovely set. Harriet Martineau was an English social theorist who wrote from a holistic, religious and feminine angle and translated works by August Comte. She, unusually for a women of her time, was able to support herself financially.
