Richard III As The Duke of Gloucester And King Of England in Two Volumes

Caroline A.Halsted

Published By: Longman, Brown, Green, And Longmans

Hardback. Possible First Edition 1844. A handsome two volume set bound in full tan leather with gilt ruled borders to the front and rear boards. Ornate gilt tooling and two title bands lay between five raised bands to the spine. The leather is in good condition despite a little surface wear. Small piece missing to the top of the spine to volume one with light abrasion to the title bands, however, these are not too serious. All edges of the text block and endpapers are marble. There is a previous owner's inscription to one of the prelims to volume one, dated 1856. The pages within are clean except for some foxing to the prelims and towards the rear. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Richard III to volme one and Richard III, His Queen and Their Son to volume two. Volume one, pp. xi + 457. Volume two, pp. xii + 570. Overall a beautiful set. Caroline A Halsted researched the life of Richard III and argued that he had been unfairly treated in her book of 1844 and that he wasn't responsible for murdering the princes in the tower.
