Hardback. Like most of Dicken's novels, this was first published in monthly instalments. This is the First Edition of this work in book form. First issue with the three page postscript to the rear of volume II and the word "Pricipal" instead of Principal. Volume II, page 115, 14 lines up from the bottom. Bound without half titles. Handsomely bound in full tan leather with gilt ruled decoration with a gilt Maltese cross to each corner, to the boards. Two leather title bands between five raised bands to the spine. The leather is rubbed and worn especially to the spines. All edges are coloured red and still quite bright. Internally the binding is still tight. Marbled endpapers. There is a previous owner's ink stamp and inscription to the verso of the frontispiece and surprisingly a Charles Dickens centenary stamp to both volumes. There is foxing to the prelims, towards the rear and occasionally throughout, with most of the plates foxed. The pages, however, are generally clean with the illustrations of Marcus Stone throughout. Vol I, pp. ix + 320. Vol, II, pp. vii + 309. Our Mutual Friend was the last novel to be completed by Charles Dickens before his death in 1870. It is a satire on society, the plot follows the story of a young man who inherits his father's fortune, who's body is then found in the river Thames. The fortune is then shared among the father's naive employees.
