Hardback. First Edition. The twelfth published novel by English author Thomas Hardy. It originally appeared in the British illustrated newspaper "The Graphic" in a serialised and censored form. Then in a three-volume book edition, in 1891 and as a single volume in 1892. Although now considered a major novel, when it first appeared it received mixed reviews as it challenged the sexual morals of Victorian England. This edition is the three-volume first edition with the original text. All volumes are uniformly bound in half red leather with marble paper covered boards and all show rubbing and wear to the leather. Very light lean to volume three. Internally the binding is tight despite cracking to the gutter of volume two. There is a previous owner's bookplate to the paste down's. The pages are very clean throughout despite the occasional spot of foxing. The elegantly designed title page, was one of the first examples of art nouveau, designed by Charles Ricketts. Volume, 1, pp. 264. Volume, 2, pp. 278. Volume 3, pp. 277. Overall a good example despite the wear to the binding.
