Edition: First Edition

Published By: John Murray

Hardback. First Edition. For the Use of Young Person. Publisher's original cream cloth spines with paper covered boards. The spines are a little delicate with a little loss, however the original paper titled bands are present and mostly intact. Small neat signature to the front with bumping to the corners although generally in good condition. Fore-edges untrimmed. The text-block to volume two is a little loose with pages 3 to 22 loose and closed tears to page 2. A few page corners have been creased by the corners while the frontispiece of volume one remains uncut. The pages are very clean throughout despite the very occasional spot of foxing. Volume one, pp. xii + . 475. Volume two, pp. 498 + 2. Overall a good set. Written under her Pseudonym of Mrs Markham, Elizabeth Penrose gained celebrity writing books for the young.  A History of France was both popular in America as well as England and was written without any political thought or with any of the horrors of history.
