Demonstrated In a Short And Easie Method; With Their Application to the most Useful Parts there-of; As, Reseolving of Equations, Infinate Series, Making Logarithms; Interest, Simple and Compound; the Chief Properties of the Conic Sections;Mensuration of Surfaces and Solids; The Fundamental Precepts of Perspective; Tri-gonometry;The Laws of Motion apply'd to Mechanic Powers, Gunnery, &c. Design'd for the Benefit, and adapted to the Capacities of Beginners. A remarkble copy written by W. Jones, a Welsh mathematician best known for his use of the symbol Pi. He was close friends with Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Edmund Halley. Bound in the original calf with the leather a little rubbed and worn, consistent with the books age. The spine hinges are a little cracked although the boards are still attached. Five raised bands to the spine with title band missing. Previous owner's inscription dated 1830 to the front free endpaper. This page is a little loose. Large, beautifully written inscription to one of the prelims, commenting on the differences between, A Problem, A Theorem and Demonstration. Remnants of a removed label to the verso of the title page. Minor pencil notation, although the pages are generally very clean. Includes several diagrams, some folding inserted into the text block. pp. 304. This work was intended for beginners which included theorems on differential calculus and infinite series. It used Pi for the ratio of circumference to diameter, following earlier abbreviations for the Greek word periphery. A scarce and valuable work.
