Bound in contemporary full tan calf leather with red marble endpapers with all edge marble, and a bookplate (the front and rear sheets) with gilt decoration to the spine title band with gilt boards to the spine, double gilt boarder to the front and rear board. This 1st edition thus of the Bentley standard novels, this being the 1st reissue of Jane Austen's novels since 1818, 340 pp. i-iv with half title series title, with engraved frontispiece and engraved vignette title by "Greatbatch" after Pickering. This being the 5th in the Standard novels and was advertised in the Athenaeum, No 300 27th July, p. 504 as to be published on the 31st August, but the Bentley list states that is was published 31st July, price 6s" Contemporary reviews, Jane Austen ('the best painter of middle life, of the quiet and unpretending classes of society') Internally a clean and complete a very good copy of this classic work of literature regarded by many as Austen's finest work, this being 250 years since birth this year.
