This lovely olive green clothbound hardback edition of The Beginners American History would certainly provide an insightful primary source for any social historian of the early 20th century. Its pictoral board depicts in black ink the figure of a woman resting on a dock post with a ship and birds in flight in the background. This book contains 298 pages of text, peppered with lovely illustrations, and followed by appendices and an index. Each chapter concludes with a series of questions in keeping with Montgomery's intention that the book "would be of interest... to pupils beginning the study of our history". In addition, the frontispiece is a painting by J.F. Bouchor depicting American soldiers celebrating French independence day in 1919, this combined with the last chapters' focus on great American inventions of the day cements the contemporary feel of the work, and suggests Mongtomery has updated its content since its original 1892 publication. This book is in very good condition, despite a slight lean and a few dents, it has clearly been well-looked after for its 100-year life, and is looking for a new owner to similarly enjoy it.
